Leftover pizza lasts 3–4 days in the fridge. That’s the short answer and for most people, that’s all they need to know.
If you want the longer version: how you store it matters a lot, the type of pizza makes a small difference, and yes, you can freeze it.
Does the type of pizza affect how long it lasts?
Mostly no, the 3–4 day rule applies to almost all pizza. But a few factors can push things in either direction.
Meat toppings (pepperoni, sausage, chicken) spoil slightly faster than plain cheese or veggie pizzas, because the meat carries additional bacteria. A meat-heavy pizza is better eaten within 3 days rather than stretching to 4.
Thick or deep-dish crust holds more moisture than thin crust, which can make it go soggy faster, though it’s still safe for 3–4 days.
Stuffed crust or cream-based sauces (white pizza, carbonara-style) have dairy components that behave more like soft cheese, eat these within 2–3 days to be safe.
Plain cheese pizza or margherita? You have the full 4 days.
How to store pizza in the fridge (to actually hit 4 days)
This is where most people go wrong. The difference between 2-day pizza and 4-day pizza is almost entirely about storage.
Use an airtight container, not the pizza box. The cardboard box is convenient but terrible for storage, it lets air in, dries out the crust, and absorbs odours from the rest of the fridge. Stack slices in an airtight container with a layer of parchment or baking paper between slices to stop them sticking.
No airtight container? Wrap each slice tightly in two layers of cling wrap. It’s not as good as a container but significantly better than the box.
Refrigerate within 2 hours. Pizza left at room temperature for more than 2 hours enters unsafe territory, bacteria multiply rapidly in the 40–140°F danger zone. Don’t leave the box on the counter overnight and assume it’s fine in the morning. It isn’t.
How to tell if leftover pizza has gone bad
Trust your senses on this one.
Smell is the most reliable indicator. Fresh pizza smells like bread, cheese, and sauce. Bad pizza smells sour, off, or just “wrong.” If it doesn’t smell right, throw it out.
Texture. A slimy or unusually wet surface on the toppings, especially on cooked meat or vegetables is a clear sign of bacterial growth.
Mould. Visible mould means the whole slice goes in the bin. Don’t pick off the mouldy bit and eat the rest mould roots penetrate further than the visible surface.
Time. If you genuinely can’t remember when you ordered it and it’s been in there a while, err on the side of throwing it out. Food poisoning from old pizza is not worth it.
Can you freeze leftover pizza?
Yes and it holds up surprisingly well.
Wrap each slice individually in cling wrap, then place them in a freezer bag or airtight container. Removing as much air as possible prevents freezer burn. Frozen pizza lasts 1–2 months at best quality, it’s safe indefinitely but the texture degrades after that.
To reheat from frozen: skip the microwave (it makes the crust rubbery). Instead, put the frozen slice directly on a baking tray in a 375°F (190°C) oven for 10–12 minutes. It comes out closer to fresh than you’d expect.
How long does pizza sauce last in the fridge?
If you’ve got leftover pizza sauce from homemade pizza night or an opened jar, the storage times are different from the pizza itself:
- Opened jarred pizza sauce: 5–7 days in the fridge in a sealed container
- Homemade pizza sauce: 4–5 days in the fridge
- Both types freeze well: up to 3 months in a sealed container or ice cube tray
Frequently asked questions
Is pizza still good after 5 days in the fridge? Technically it might not have visible mould yet, but 5 days is past the safe window. The 3–4 day rule exists because bacterial levels reach risky levels around that point even when the food looks fine. When in doubt, throw it out.
Can you eat week-old pizza? No. A week is well outside any safe storage window. The risk of food poisoning isn’t worth it.
Does reheating make old pizza safe again? No, reheating doesn’t reset the clock. If the pizza has been in the fridge for 4 days, heating it doesn’t make it safe for another few days. The bacteria count has already accumulated over time.
Is it safe to eat cold pizza straight from the fridge? Yes, as long as it’s within the 3–4 day window and was stored properly. Cold pizza is a perfectly reasonable breakfast.
